What Makes a Bakery Coeliac-Safe?

  • Dedicated facilities vs shared prep. In a traditional bakery, wheat flour hangs in the air and settles on surfaces, equipment and other bakes. That makes a shared bakery a high cross-contamination risk for people with coeliac disease, even when a recipe contains no gluten. A dedicated gluten-free bakery removes that risk at the source.
  • Dedicated ovens and trays. Where a bakery also handles gluten, look for gluten-free bakes made on their own baking sheets and tins, baked separately, and stored and displayed apart from everything else.
  • How we list bakeries. Each bakery here shows its kitchen set-up and which details have been confirmed. A listing is a starting point, not a guarantee, so tell the bakery about your needs and check before you order.
